Design a brand for a new Major League Baseball team - Las Vegas Desert Dogs

As a final round candidate for a designer position at Major League Baseball, I was tasked with the assignment to design for a new major league baseball team called the Las Vegas Desert Dogs. Designs needed to include team logo,  uniforms, and stadium branding.

Las Vegas Sports

Several sports teams and organization have called Las Vegas their home, so I started my design process looking at how these teams used the city's history and culture as inspiration in creating their brand. It set an example for me and motivated me to design something new and different to the rest.

History, Culture, and Wildlife

Nevada

"The Silver State"

Nevada is located in the western US and is largely desert terrain.  It is the nation's second-largest producer of silver, after Alaska. The state got its nickname from it's long history as a major silver-mining district in the United States.

Las Vegas

"Entertainment Capital of the World"

Las Vegas is located within the Mojave Desert and is the most populous city in Nevada . The city is internationally known for a broad scope of entertainment options including casinos, shows, exhibits, museums, theme parks, and nightclubs.

Coyotes

"Desert Dogs"

Coyotes primarily inhabit dens in open prairies and deserts. These animals are most active during the dawn and dusk. When hunting large prey, coyotes attack in "packs". Coyotes form strong family packs and communicate with a distinctive howl.

Primary Logo

Badge Design

After doing intensive research on the city's geography and history as well as exploring facts about their mascot - the coyote, each detail of my design has a purpose. I chose to depict the coyote howling because it is a distinct feature of the animal. Coyotes form strong family units which emulates the bond of a team and loyalty of fans. The colors and icons featured speak to the desert dwelling of the coyote and location of the ballpark. The sunset background alludes to the time of day coyotes are most active and ties in with the warm colors of the desert. The silver accents on the coyote and perimeter touch on the state's history as a silver mining hub. The eight-pointed star in the background comes from the iconic "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign and circular form with diamond accents make the logo appear like a poker chip, linking the design to the city of Las Vegas.

Hat & Jersey Design

Traditionally baseball teams use a typographic design for baseball caps. Similar to the Oakland Athletics and Chicago White Sox, I chose to highlight the team name rather than the city's initials. In my design, I display two overlapping "D's" in a stylized western font  with a silver outline to hint at the city's historical involvement in the American frontier. I use the cactus and eight-pointed star in the center to connect the design to my primary logo.

Taking the field

Baseball uniform trends have changed overtime, but what has remained consistent are the difference in home and away uniforms. In my uniform designs, I create variations for each. The home jerseys use the typographic logo on the front, where as the away jerseys showcase the city's name.

The Coyote's Den

When deciding what to name the ballpark,  I felt it was only natural to give the Desert Dogs a "Den." Coyotes live in a den, after all.  The stadium signage is designed  in an "Old West" manner with inspiration from Spanish colonial architecture and the grandiose of Las Vegas style.
